Krakow is Poland's gem. The perfectly preserved medieval old town, Europe's largest market square and incredibly cheap yet vibrant nightlife make it one of Europe's best value destinations.
Krakow has it all: millennia of history, the Jewish quarter Kazimierz with courtyard bars, underground jazz cellars, Auschwitz-Birkenau an hour away, Wieliczka salt mines and hearty Polish cuisine. Everything costs half of Western Europe.
May-September for weather. December for Christmas markets in the square. Winter is cold (-5°C) but atmospheric.
Pierogi (Polish dumplings), żurek (rye soup), obwarzanek (bread ring), zapiekanka (baguette pizza), bigos (cabbage stew) and Polish vodka. Eating in Krakow is incredibly cheap.
Stare Miasto for the UNESCO centre. Kazimierz for bars and nightlife. Podgórze for Schindler's Factory. Nowa Huta for socialist architecture.
Balice Airport (KRK) is 20 minutes from the centre by direct train. Buses to Auschwitz (75 min) and Wieliczka (30 min).
